A
good portrait is a deeply personal thing, as unique as
the subject that sits for it. It's the challenge of every
portrait artist to capture the individuality of each person
in a way that feels intimate and candid, while at the
same time creating a work of art that can be displayed
in a proud, dignified manner.
What
separates a decent portrait from a truly great one is
more than a matter of resemblance. If you can look the
piece in the eye, relate to it as a real person, and tell
something about who that person is, not just how they
look, that's the measure of a great portrait. In a mediocre
portrait, this just isn't possible.
Below,
a sampling of some of the people I've been privileged
enough to meet and attempt to do justice to.
