Editioned
pieces are produced for the art market by the sculptor
based on his own ideas and preferences, and on what he
thinks he can sell. Unlike a painter or other artist,
a sculptor is able to make a mold of his original clay
model, and produce many original copies of the same piece.
Since nearly all bronze or cast sculpture is a reproduction
of an impermanent clay or wax model, endless "originals"
can be made, all of which are identical in quality and
value as an art object. These editioned pieces may be
reproduced as long as there are buyers, or they may be
limited to a certain number of reproductions to increase
exclusivity and collectibility. Generally, the buyer of
an editioned piece has no say in the content of that piece,
they simply pick it out among other pieces for sale in
a galllery or showroom, and order a piece made. Editioned
pieces are not mass-produced or manufactured in a factory.
They are still produced to order by hand by the sculptor,
or skilled practitioners or apprentices working under
him.
