Biography

Joshua Diedrich was born in Trenton, downriver from Detroit, Michigan in 1973. His father was a middle school-teacher and his mother a homemaker. At the age of three, his family moved to the village of Paw Paw, in the Kalamazoo area of south-west Michigan, where he would spend his childhood. His sister Anne was born in 1975. At the age of fourteen, he entered the adult program at the Kalamazoo Institute for the Arts museum school to study life drawing and sculpture with painter Martin Maddox and Italian sculptor Dora Natella.

He attended the University of Michigan from 1991-1995, studying with figure sculptor Louis Marinaro, abstract sculptor Jon Rush and printmakers Paul Stewart and Takahara Takeshi among others, earning a BFA in Figure Sculpture and Drawing.

In 2000, he moved to France to work as a teaching assistant at the Vaugel Sculpture Academy in the Loire Valley. While studying there, he met his wife, Violène, a University Lecturer, and later moved to Paris with her. He joined the faculty of the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts as Anatomy Instructor in 2005, and was promoted to Sculpture Department Head two months later. He currently lives with his wife, dividing his time between Kalamazoo and south-west France.
